Selank: What It Is, How It Works & What the Research Shows

Overview

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide based on tuftsin, a natural immune peptide, with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail added for stability. It reduces anxiety without sedation or dependence, through effects on GABA signaling, enkephalin breakdown and serotonin. It also modulates immune signaling. Selank is approved in Russia as an anxiolytic and is usually given intranasally.

Why researchers study it

Anxiety

Reduces anxiety without sedation in Russian clinical use.

Focus under stress

Explored for clearer thinking during stress.

Immune balance

Modulates immune signaling.

How it works

Synthetic peptide investigated in anxiety-related research.

Adamantane & the blood–brain barrier

Chemically attaching an adamantane group to a peptide can increase its lipid (fat) solubility. Researchers hypothesize that this modification may help certain compounds cross the tightly regulated blood–brain barrier. The effect depends on the specific modified molecule; greater lipid solubility alone does not establish brain delivery or clinical benefit. This does not apply automatically to the unmodified peptide and is not a reconstitution additive.

What the research shows

  • Anxiety symptoms and stress-related signaling have been investigated.

Typical protocol

Reconstitute a 10 mg vial with 3 mL bacteriostatic water for 3.3333 mg/mL. Typical range: 200–800 mcg 1–2x daily (am/mid day) · 5 on 2 off or daily, 4–8 weeks.

Common stacks

  • Selank + Semax — The most common nootropic pairing: Selank for calm, Semax for focus.

Potential benefits & side effects

Potential benefits

  • Improved focus and mental clarity
  • Reduced anxiety and stress reactivity
  • Better mood and motivation
  • Neuroprotective support (BDNF-related peptides)

Side effects

  • Nasal irritation with intranasal use
  • Mild headache
  • Overstimulation or irritability (Semax-type)
  • Drowsiness (Selank, DSIP)

Lifestyle factors

  • Cycle it: run on/off cycles to maintain responsiveness.
  • Timing: dose stimulating peptides (Semax family) early in the day; calming ones (Selank, DSIP) later.
  • Sleep and hydration have a bigger effect on cognition than any peptide.
  • Limit caffeine stacking to avoid overstimulation.
